Three courthouses. One county. If DPSS has contacted your family, we want to help you understand what is happening and protect your rights from the very first interaction.
The decisions you make at the beginning of a CPS investigation can have a lasting impact on your family. Before you speak with DPSS, speak with an attorney.
The primary dependency court for Riverside County. Our firm appears here regularly.
Handles cases for families in southwestern Riverside County, including Temecula and surrounding areas. Our firm appears here regularly.
Handles cases in the Coachella Valley and eastern Riverside County. Our firm does not currently appear at the Indio Courthouse. If your case is assigned to Indio, contact us and we will discuss your options.
A social worker wants to speak with you. They may ask to see your home, interview your children, review medical records, or sign documents. You may feel pressure to cooperate immediately because you believe doing so will make the investigation go away.
The reality is that every decision made during a CPS investigation can affect what happens next.
Many parents assume they do not need an attorney unless a court case is filed. By then, critical statements have already been made, records have already been created, and the agency has often formed opinions about the family.
Our goal is not to create conflict where none exists. Our goal is to help families understand what is happening, protect their rights, and make informed decisions throughout the investigation process.
Unlike some neighboring counties, Riverside County DPSS does not always permit attorneys to actively participate in every stage of an investigation.
That does not mean legal representation is unnecessary.
Preparation matters. Strategy matters. Documentation matters.
An experienced attorney can help you understand the risks, identify potential issues before they become larger problems, and avoid common mistakes that may unnecessarily complicate an investigation.
The earlier a family receives legal advice, the more options are often available.
If Riverside County DPSS has contacted your family, schedule a CPS Investigation Strategy Session to discuss your situation and develop a plan for moving forward.

These reviews reflect the experience of individual clients. Every CPS and juvenile dependency case turns on its own facts, and past results do not guarantee a similar outcome in any other case.

In California, social workers can only remove a child without a prior court order in narrow emergency circumstances where they believe there is an immediate threat to the child's safety. Riverside County DPSS must then file a petition and appear in court within 48 court hours (Welfare and Institutions Code § 313). If your child has been removed, contact an attorney immediately.
You are not legally required to answer a DPSS social worker's questions without an attorney present. You have the right to have legal representation before any formal interview. Anything you say to a social worker can be documented and used in a juvenile dependency petition.
A detention hearing is the first court hearing after DPSS removes a child or files a WIC § 300 petition. It must occur within 48 court hours of removal. At the hearing, the judge decides whether the child stays in DPSS custody or returns home pending further proceedings. In Riverside County, detention hearings are heard at Riverside Juvenile Court or Southwest Justice Center depending on where the family lives.
